Smart Farming & Water Saving IoT System
The problem
Smallholder farmers often lack real-time visibility into soil moisture and irrigation needs, leading to either water waste or under-watered crops — both costly in regions where water is scarce and farming margins are thin.
What changed
- Developed a government-funded IoT system, in partnership with The Institution of Engineers (India), that monitors soil and environmental conditions using low-cost sensor hardware.
- Built the logic to translate sensor readings into actionable irrigation recommendations for farmers.
- Focused on affordability and ease of deployment, since the target users were smallholder farms rather than large commercial operations.
Result
- A working smart farming and water-saving system deployed as part of a government-funded initiative, aimed at reducing water waste while improving crop outcomes for participating farmers.
